45 years later, we've forgotten

CNN.com reports that "August has become the deadliest month for the U.S. military in Afghanistan since the of 11 September 2001".
How bad is deadly? 46. In August.
The United States now has about 62,000 U.S. troops on the ground, and its NATO allies have another 35,000. The Pentagon is planning to add 6,000 troops by the end of the year.
That would bring the total to just over 100,000 troops in Afghanistan.

On 6 June 1944, the then-equivalent of NATO put about 100,000 troops ashore on the beaches of Normandy. On that first day, there were nearly 5,000 casualties.
