Misquoted, yet again


Rico says sometimes the misquote is better than the real thing, especially when it's Hunter S. Thompson. This is the real quote, from his Generation of Swine: Tales of Shame and Degradation in the '80s:
The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.
It was misquoted in Gonzo, but still works:
"The TV business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."
Having just watched Gonzo on DVD, Rico says the world lost a great and terrible critic when Hunter blew his brains out back in 2005 (only four years; it seems so much longer). Like a lot of impatient people, Hunter couldn't stick around to see how things turned out...
