Twits twittering Twitter

FoxNews.com has the rumors (unfounded, Rico suspects) of Apple wangling to buy Twitter for $700 million:
Two important tech blogs, TechCrunch and ValleyWag, both reported that Apple was making a $700 million play for the microblogging Web site, the hottest company in Silicon Valley since, well, Facebook (which did actually try to buy Twitter last year).
"Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference in June," said TechCrunch's unnamed but "normally reliable" source.
ValleyWag's source, possibly the same person, was identified as someone who "has been recruited by Apple" for a senior position. But even TechCrunch head honcho Michael Arrington, who posted the item on his blog, was skeptical, noting that other sources knew nothing about such talks.
The Wall Street Journal's Kara Swisher practically laughed out loud, noting that Apple and Twitter had little in common, and that Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Ev Williams were due in New York Tuesday to be feted as two of the people on Time magazine's "Time 100" list of influential people. She pointed out that only a month ago, Google was rumored to be about to buy Twitter, a story that soon evaporated. She also figured it'd be only a matter of time before rumors about Microsoft, Yahoo, Time Warner, and even News Corporation negotiating to buy Twitter came along. "You could set your broken-but-right-twice-a-day clock by it, in fact," quipped Swisher.
Rico says he's not buying Twitter, even for a buck...
