Rico says this is what he and the ladyfriend saw in the aftermath of 9.11 as they drove south from Nantucket home to Philadelphia; the oncoming lanes on the freeway were full of emergency vehicles headed north, while the southbound lanes were empty. Some things, Rico thought, were self-evident, but he guesses not...
