Can't they get English straight?

The Brits don't use a period after the designation Mr in a sentence, and Americans use a period after the designation Ms., and both are weird... (Wikipedia cites Ms. as a contraction of 'Mistress', but there was a big war over at the magazine of the same name whether they should use a period or not, one side claiming that it wasn't a contraction of anything.)
