Loren Eiseley, noted anthropologist, science writer, ecologist, and poet, died in 1977 and (by odd coincidence, him being a Nebraskan) is buried a few miles down the road from Rico. In his
The Immense Journey, published in 1957, he wrote this:
"We have joined the caravan, you might say, at a certain point; we will travel as far as we can, but we cannot in one lifetime see all that we would like to see or learn all that we hunger to know."
Rico says that is the truth, and he regrets that it's true of him, as well.
