Having seen it first run in 1975, Rico wanted to see
Dersu Uzala again. Needless to say, he didn't remember more than the general outline of the story: a Russian officer surveying Siberia chances upon a Goldi tribesman and befriends him. It starred indigenous actors, but was directed by Akira Kurosawa, in his only non-Japanese film (ignoring all the films made by others in the West from his movies or screenplays, including
The Magnificent Seven (Seven Samurai) and
Last Man Standing). Long (144 minutes), elegaic, but beautiful (all that Siberian countryside), and goes right to the heart.
