Oldies but goodies

I last saw Gladiatorerna right after it came out; I was living in Stockholm in the summer of 1970. An amazing movie by that unsung director Peter Watkins, it portrayed the 'International Peace Game', a fake little war staged to avoid real wars by the major powers of the world. It had no stars, was filmed almost entirely on location in an abandoned factory, and is loaded with subtitles. Is it any wonder that it didn't make a big splash on the movie scene? (They did strip out the multi-lingual subtitles, however; I remembered them being in English, Chinese, and French throughout. Probably too confusing for the television market, but it was an interesting quirk in the original.)
However, it's worth noting that I remembered the movie, in surprising detail, for forty years. More surprisingly, the movie actually held up upon a second viewing, with nearly the emotional charge it had the first time.

Rico says get it from Netflix. (They use the English title, The Gladiators.) It's dark, it's disturbing, and it's confusing, just like 'real' combat.
