Seems Steve Irwin wasn't a total wanker, after all.
According to more recent reports, he went snorkeling in daylight to shoot a short segment for his daughter's new television show for kids. (Crikey! An eight-year-old with her own television show on Animal Planet. Wonder how long it too the Discovery Channel to sign up for that after she stamped her little foot...)
From an article in an Australian news site, "Irwin died Monday as he was shooting a program on the Great Barrier Reef. John Stainton, Irwin's manager and close friend, disclosed details of his death Tuesday. He said he had viewed video showing the TV star pulling the poisonous stingray barb from his chest. It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up and spiked him ... and he pulled it out, and the next minute he's gone, Stainton said. Queensland Police Superintendent Michael Keating said there was no evidence Irwin threatened or intimidated the stingray, a normally placid species that deploys its poisonous tail spines only as a defense."
Still, not surprising, given Irwin's rash behavior with even bigger and deadlier animals. I feel bad for his wife and kids. It would have been worse, of course, if they'd been on the boat with him...
According to the same site "the video was not released to the public". Want to bet how long before it's up on YouTube? I give it a day before the first parodies show up...
